AN INTRODUCTION TO DOG GAMES
at Buddies Hundeschule, Germany
4 - 5 September 2004

Sally was invited by Silvia Foeller to give a lecture on the eight Dog Games at the Buddies Hundeschule, in the beautiful countryside of Bavaria.

The weekend was well attended by a wide cross section of dog handlers and trainers, some of whom had traveled quite some distance to find out more about these new dog training games, ideas and methods. Many of them were expecting a busy weekend of dogs being trained over various pieces of equipment, with both dogs and handlers rushing about from one exercise to another, but these thoughts were soon dispelled as the delgates realised that Sally's methods of dog training were both thought provoking and very different from what they were used to doing in the past.

As the weekend progressed the delegates were able to learn more about how important it is to get dogs to relax in the training environment before any actual training is begun. While each dog was relaxing ("reading the newspaper" in the training compound) the delegates were able to learn how to watch and asses the dog's stress levels, its strengths and weaknesses for deciding how to structure future training sessions, and how to help the handler understand their dog's body language better.

They also learnt not only the structure and methods for teaching the Games, they also came to recognise how important it was for ANY dog training to be done in small, achievable steps so that the dog can succeed and build confidence in itself and its surroundings.
