RAKKAAT HAUKUT - Helsinki, Finland
DOG TRAINERS COURSE 2004

Students and staff enjoying the relaxed atmosphere of the weekend lectures

Rakkaat Haukut (which translated means "Beloved Dog") is one of the most famous dog training organisations in Finland, and is based in and around the city of Helsinki.

As well as working with a wide range of dogs and handlers (including those dogs with behavioural problems) Rakkaat Haukut also runs a very popular and successful six month course for student dog trainers. One of the reasons why this intensive course is so popular is the wide range and depth of the topics that are covered.

For instance, for the first weekend of the lectures Sally explains to the students how dogs learn by using all their senses - sight, sound, taste, smell and touch - as well as using their instincts, and how different breeds of dogs need different kinds of motivators to suit their particular drives and instincts.

Meanwhile on the third weekend Sally returns to teach the students how dogs communicate with other dogs and humans (including how they use calming signals), and how stress effects their ability to learn and behave. She also explains how the environment that the dog is trained in has a profound effect on its powers of concentration and therefore progress in any training situation.

Sally has been invited back to Helsinki in the Autumn of 2005 to repeat this successful Trainers Course once again.
