The DOG-GAMES Hand and Bounce & Hand use a soft rubber car mat to put the retrieve articles on. It acts as a backdrop for the article, making it more obvious for the dog to see over long distances and prevents the dog loosing sight of the article in the grass.
These car mats are cheap and easily obtainable from car accessory shops for just a few pounds.
