ROUND - STARTERS
We are going to explain two different methods of teaching a dog to do the Dog-Game Round.
- The first method explains
how to teach a dog to follow and touch a target stick with its nose
- this training can be done informally at home. Once the dog has
understood the concept, the target stick can held by the trainer or
helper while they are standing behind the
traffic cone. Then the dog can run up to touch the target stick
as it is being moved around the cone before running back to its
handler for it motivator. This method
of training takes longer to teach but has the advantage of being
able to transfer the dog's willingness to follow the target stick
to other training situations (eg. teaching tricks for Heelwork
To Music etc.) and is particularly suitable for those dogs that
are able to concentrate.
- The second method of
teaching a dog to do Round is done with the helper or trainer
calling and luring the dog around the cone using their hands and
body movements.
Whichever method you use you will find over a period of time that the dog builds up the confidence to run further away until it can do a sendaway to run around the traffic cone (or similar object) that is on the 51ft marker, returning to its handler for its motivator for its reward the instant the handler has got hold of its harness.
As with all the Dog-Games, each stage is non-competitive and is designed to help both dog and handler learn at their own pace and to their own ability. Dog-Games recommends that the dog wears a well fitting harness so that the handler can hold the dog comfortably and securely before the sendaway.
